Sinopsis:

Manuel y Adela no pasan por el mejor momento de su matrimonio. En un viaje a la laguna de Las Cañas conocerán a Santi, un joven amante de los pájaros.

Memoria de dirección:

Hacia tiempo que me rondaba por la cabeza la película ‘Viaggio in Italia’ ('Te querré siempre') de Rosselini: sus personajes, la crisis a la que se enfrentaban durante su viaje por el país, cómo el paisaje se convierte en uno más, en el detonante de su historia.

Partiendo de esa idea, se me ocurrió utilizar el paisaje de Las Cañas, en Viana, Navarra, como lugar donde Manuel y Adela irán y donde se pondrá de manifiesto la crisis que atraviesan -a modo de historia Carveriana donde parece que apenas pasa nada pero todo sucede de manera soterrada, con un final abrupto-, situando a las aves como elementos metafóricos para hablar de los propios sentimientos y caracteres de los personajes y lanzando una pregunta al aire:

¿Por qué pensamos que las mujeres necesitan tener siempre a alguien a su lado?

Los personajes principales:

Adela es una mujer decidida e inteligente, con un buen puesto de trabajo y un logrado status social. A pesar de su juventud (no llega a los 40) está casada con Manuel desde hace unos cuantos años; los suficientes como para perder la pasión y dejarse sepultar por la rutina del cariño. Hay en ella algo del espíritu aventurero, independiente y luchador que le hizo llegar hasta donde está que siente que ha perdido.

Manuel, por su lado, es algo mayor que ella, también un buen médico, pero mucho más tranquilo y conformista. Tiene un lado ausente y un mundo interior muy personal que en un principio enamoraron a Adela, pero que con los años está convirtiéndose en cierta distancia y frialdad con respecto a la relación. No por ello ha dejado de querer a su mujer.

La Laguna de las Cañas:

La riqueza del paisaje de la laguna de Viana me pareció la localización perfecta donde poder obtener la complejidad que el relato requería.

Synopsis:

Manuel and Adela are not going through the best stage of their relationship. In a trip to Las Cañas lake they will meet Santi, a young bird spotter.

Director's notes:

The idea of Rosselini's film 'Viaggio in Italia' had been at the back of my mind since some time ago: its characters, the personal crisis that they have to endure during their trip in Italia, how the landscape become one more character and at the same time the trigger of the story.

Inspired by this idea, I chose Las Cañas landscape, in the north of Spain, as the place where Manuel and Adela will go and in where the crisis that they are experiencing as a couple will come to light -like in a Carver story, in which apparently nothing happens but everything is there, hidden, with such an abrupt end-. At the same time, birds are used here as a metaphorical element to speak about the feelings and personalities of the main characters and, overall, to pose a question:

Why do people think women always need to have somebody by their side?

Main characters:

Adela is an intelligent and determined woman, with a good job as surgeon and a high social status. Despite her youth (she is not even 40), she is married with Manuel since some years ago. Time enough to feel that they have lost their passion buried by force of habits, turned into affection. In some way she feels there's something from her old independent, adventurous and combative spirit that she has lost.

Manuel, is older than Adela. He is also a good doctor, but calmer and more conformist than his wife, and with a particular and absent inner world. This special personality that made her fall in love with him when they both met, however, over years has become distance and coldness in their relationship. Despite everything, he is still in love with Adela.

Las Cañas Lake:

The natural wealth of the landscape of Las Cañas seemed to me the perfect location for the story, in order to get the clompexity that it required.
